½-gallon Irish pewter haystack measure made by Joseph Austen and Son, Cork c1823-46 their crowned X mark under the base. ½ GALLON capacity label to upper body front, with two verification marks to the inside of the rim. Unusually, the verifications are for Glasgow: one is the City of Glasgow 'tree' mark , and the other their later crowned VR over 36. A first-rate example of this sought after large size, especially in such excellent condition. Provenance: formerly in the collection of Bryan Darby. Capacity is half-gallon Imperial. 10” tall to rim, with 5½” base diameter. 1510g weight. REF: C2025
