Lidless mid-19th century half-gill pewter measure with pear shaped body, and Aberdeen Type 2 handle (see p218-19 Scottish Pewter). This was made lidless, and has a drilled but unslotted hinge lug. This is a substantially made item and is heavily cast. Typically with measures of this type it has no maker's mark, but is probably the product of an Edinburgh pewterer. Capacity label ½-GILL to rim, with two verification marks, the earliest being a dated 1849 City of Edinburgh mark, with a later one for the County of Aberdeen. The bulbous body has two pairs of incised lines to the upper and lower parts, and one to lower part of rim. The simple strap handle has a plain curving terminal and strut at the lower attachment point. In used condition, with medium grey original surface patina. Capacity is 2.5 fl oz. 2⅝” tall, 2½" to rim, with 1¾” base diameter. 136g weight. REF: P2000
