Pre-Imperial pint tapered body mug made by John & William Shaw, London 1808-33 their oval mark inside the base. “C” handle with spatulate terminal and escutcheon to upper handle attachment and tongued thumb rest. Large crowned “WR” to left of handle, large crowned “GR” to right of handle with “IBI” for Berkshire County along with two Berkshire stag verifications, a large “G” and “25” in a rectangle. Large very attractive cartouche to front of central body, “F. Forty, Shoulder of Mutton, Binfield”. Note the heavy nature of the rim, which seems earlier than the allotted dates, so could mean the mug is by John Shaw working alone from 1776 onwards. In excellent condition, with a medium-light grey original surface patina. Capacity is an Ale pint = 20.3 fl oz. 4¼” tall, with 3½” rim and 3⅞” base diameters. REF: P2201
