Rare squat circular English pewter circular trencher salt* made by the unidentified pewterer RB his touchmark struck centrally under the foot that is hollow to the base of the salt cavity c1690-1710. The globular body with hemispherical internal bowl has a thickened slightly raised rim, with incised lines below it. The convex hollow foot is plain. Provenance: formerly in the collections of the late Stanley Shemmell (Lot 251 Bonhams 26.10.2006) and Ian Robinson USA. In excellent condition, with medium-light grey original surface patina. 1½" tall, with 2¼" diameter base. 106g weight. This is the one to the left of the group photo of three salts, of which only the centre one remains unsold. REF: P1905.* there are almost identical salts in poorer condition in the Neish (#860-495), Colonial Williamsburg (#172 page 146), and John Douglas collections (Lot 303 Bonhams 19.4.2021).
