Rare pair of 9¼ inch diameter Irish pewter 4-lobed communion plates from Christ Church Belfast made by William Hodges, Dublin 1765-90, his hallmarks and crowned X to reverse of one, and crowned X only to the other. The more fully marked one is also scratch engraved 'Christ Church Belfast'. This rare form of wavy edge has a gadrooned rope edge reeded rim, with inward and outward pointing cusps. Illustrated on the Database of the Pewter Society, and for another example see the John Douglas collection (Lot 307 Bonhams 19.4.2021). Provenance: bought in 2004 on ebay when vendor told me they came with documentation that may explain how they came to be in private hands (his letter and one from churchwardens of Christ Church shown). In superb condition with excellent hammering to the bouge. 498g and 472g weight. REF: C1983
